Sorry to put a damper on things, but my thinking is if it isn't held this weekend, there doesn't seem like a lot of point organising a LAN-Ding for Feb with the next OWL in 2 weeks.
So maybe we need to change our goals a little and maybe plan for March instead.

I just don't have enough time to update. I did offer before if someone wants to maintain the site then I can pass the details onto them.

yeah ,
The server is having a overhaul

Setup proposed
OPERATING SYSTEMS
Fedora core 6 ( Base Os , Running apache php , mysql, HLSTATS paerl appliction)
Clarkconnect Home edition ( For dhcp , dns etc)
Windows Xp home ( Game servers)

All of these will be running on top of Fedora by using VMWare

The Reason behind this is i got Extremeley pissed at windows poor performance this will be experimental at first, i am being assured by (tcuser) gregr who is doing a diploma in network managment that this will work smooth

yah

vmware is being used more and more in large organizations for mission critical servers.

I'm not 100% sure how it will go running as a game server, it wont be as good as running a dedicated games server but u never know it might not be that bad. Make sure you allocate plenty of resources to the windows VM and c how u go.

I have read some reports of vmware being used as a successful game server but i have also read where people have had a lot of trouble with the game server quite slow.

Erm, hang on, let me get this straight.

you are Running Fedora core 6, and you have then installed VMWare onto it.. and inside VMWare you are running another OS which is holding up SQL / Web services / DHCP and dedicated gaming servers?

sorry to disagree with any prior advice given.. but IMHO thats juts plain stoopid.

you have OS overhead (sure, *nix is a lot less that windows, or at least on par if not configured right) and you then have the VMware overhead on that followed by the extra OS and then the game servers which are power hungry.

The idea behind using VMware for servers is to allow for mission critical systems to run on an INDEPENDENT install.
ie: having web servers in one VMWare setup, whilst you have your Printer management server running in another.

Think having Apache for PHP and IIS setup for ASP, in a lot of cases, you would hav windows setup in one and *nix setup for apache in the other.

You would do far better to cut the VMware out of it, and just run everything directly in the main install..

As for any issues you were having getting everything running on server 2003, im afraid i would have to list that as incompetence. we had all of our game deds, web severs and DHCP setup and working (short of local intranet content anyways) without a hitch, on more than one system over the life of the OWLs..
