i very much doubt its telnet. it just used the telnet protocol. (I have made similar apps to do chat and use the telnet as a client, not server)

Yer its a custom program of course, it wouldn't take much to handle the sessions and create a basic program. Just be a lot of work to for the ascii art.

Lol, it'd be interesting to see an movie to ascii convertor. Like how they have jpg to ascii convertors. Hmm probably wouldn't come out well. But it'd be worth looking at. =)
