GOVERNMENT House employees loaded giant vice-regal pumpkins, baked goods and preserves into the back of a station wagon in an echo of past traditions yesterday.[/b]


The polished Government House vehicle -- a far smoother ride than the old horse and cart -- delivered the produce to Copping for today"s Bream Creek Show.

Although the office of the Governor has never entered the Bream Creek Show specifically, senior adviser to the Governor Anne Parker said entering agricultural shows with produce from the Governor"s grounds and gardens had been one of the office"s original functions.

"The Governor would set a standard for other people to aspire to," Mrs Parker said.

"They were very successful at the Royal Hobart Show."

Governor William Cox has entered his prized pickled walnuts and Lady Cox will enter a cake.

Other entries from the house include fruit and vegetables, jams and relishes, sauces and cordials, baked goods and eggs from the Governor"s chickens.

Mrs Parker said the office was expecting to be "humbled" in the giant pumpkin competition.

"There are people who enter every year who have enormous ones, but we will learn and ours will get bigger and bigger every year."

The idea to enter had seen "an enormous amount of enthusiasm" from staff and entries had also been submitted by their children as well as former staff members.

She said plans were already being made for entries in the Royal Hobart Show.

Mr and Mrs Cox"s produce will be on display in the show"s Hall of Industry which opens to the public at 12.30pm.

The show opens at 10am at the showgrounds in Marion Bay Rd, near Copping.
